Tips for Caring for your Septic Systems

If you own a home with a septic system, you need to take good care of it. A septic system is a wastewater treatment system that collects and treats the water from your sinks, toilets, showers and laundry. It consists of a tank and a drainfield, where bacteria break down the waste and release clean water into the soil.

A septic system can last for decades if it is properly maintained. However, if it is neglected, it can cause serious problems for your home and the environment. Some of the signs of a failing septic system are:

- Sewage backups in your drains or toilets

- Foul odors around your house or yard

- Wet spots or lush vegetation over your drainfield

- Slow draining or gurgling sounds in your plumbing

- High levels of nitrates or bacteria in your well water

To prevent these issues, you should have your septic system inspected and pumped every 3 to 5 years by a licensed professional. You should also avoid putting things like grease, oil, chemicals, paper towels, wipes, diapers or feminine products into your septic system. These can clog your pipes or interfere with the bacterial action in your tank.

Why Landlords need to have an additional policy regarding Septic Systems

By following these best practices, you can keep your septic system working efficiently and safely for years to come. A well-maintained septic system will not only protect your home value and health, but also the quality of water and wildlife in your area.
